This copy is in the hand of Cook's clerk, William Dawson, and the title page records: "Captain James Cook's Voyage from The Year 1772 to July 1775 given to me by Himself, Bristol". (See J. C. Beaglehole ed. "The Journals of Captain James Cook" (1961), II, ccxxii.) This copy was presented to the National Library of Australia by H.M. King George VI to commemorate the proposed visit to Australia in 1952 by H.R.H. Princess Elizabeth and H.R.H. Duke of Edinburgh. The visit was cancelled because of the death of King George VI and the accession of Queen Elizabeth. Bound photocopy of manuscript journal (transcript) of second expedition to the Pacific in H.M.S. Resolution during which Cook discovered or re-discovered most of the Polynesian Islands and proved that the supposed Southern Continent could not exist north of Latitude 60D N.

James Cook (b. November 7, 1728, Marton, Great Britan-d. February 14, 1779, Hawaii) was a British explorer, navigator, cartographer, and captain in the Royal Navy. He became an apprentice to some shipowners in Whitby. In 1759 he became master of his own ship, the Northumberland. The following winter, while laid up in Halifax, he studied mathematics and attained a sound knowledge of astronomical navigation. Cook went on to become an eminent circumnavigator.
